Reflections 4/13/11

We are almost done editing our movie!  We have added all of the music and all of the credits, we just need to add the bloopers and perfect everything else.  Hopefully we can have everything finished before Monday.  I give myself a 5 out of 5 for productiveness today.  Tomorrow is FLVS and I hope that I can accomplish a lot.

Daily Goals 4/13/11

Today we plan to finish our movie!  It is almost done.  We have all of the clips put in, but the editing is a little rough and we need too perfect it.  We also need to add the rest of Kylie's voice overs and add credits and bloopers.  We have had ITBS testing this morning and we don't have very much time left for our project work.  My partners and I need to spend our time wisely today to finish the video.

Reflections 4/11/11

Good news! We have just about finished editing our movie!  I spent the afternoon with Alyssa and we were vigorously editing.  We only need one more workday to complete it all.  I practiced my presentation with Mrs. Kelly this morning; I thought it went swell!  I am excited to show everyone what I worked on.  I achieved my goals today because I was focused.  I give myself a 5 out of 5 for productiveness for the day.

Daily Goals 4/11/11

My goal for today is to edit the movie!  We have everything filmed and we need to get a good start on the editing process.  We have until Wednesday to finish everything.  I also need to practice my presentation with Mrs. Kelly.  I am presenting my project, "What Makes a Song a Hit," tomorrow morning.  I need to turn in the final draft of my literary analysis today.  I believe that today is going to be very productive!

Reflections 4/6/11

Today was very successful! My group finished the filming of our movie. We are now going to start the editing process. Editing is going to take a few days so we might have to edit some after school. I almost finished revising the feedback that my experts gave me. I have a few more things on that list that I need to complete. I also need someone else to proofread it before tomorrow and before I have my presentation workshop. Overall I would give myself a 10 out of 10 for productiveness today. I feel like I completed what I needed to.

Daily Goals 4/6/11

Today my group has to finish the remainder of our filming. We are going to finish filming the boy part and we are going to start filming the girl part. Kylie is a great actress and McKenzie and Alyssa are great co-directors. We are really excited for this project and are expecting it to be great. Today I also need to finish my first project which was on music from the previous PBL cycle. I have gotten expert reviews and I need to put the finishing touches. I also need to plan my presentation.

Reflections 4/4/11

Today has been a very productive day! My group finished about half of our filming. I would give us a 10 out of 10 for productiveness today. We are probably going to have to spend some extra days filming after school to complete our project. I am feeling very comfortable that we are going to finish our project on time.

Daily Goals 4/4/11

Today my group has one main goal: BEGIN FILMING! We have finished out script and we are ready to start filming now. I have collected all of the props that we need and I am getting ready to go over the script with Kylie. I think today is going to be a very productive day. I have a good feeling that we are going to get a lot done. I also hope to communicate effectively with my  partners also.

Daily Goals 3/30/11

Hello everyone! My group is getting really excited for our project today.  I think that our goals on Monday were a little far fetched.  Today we are planning more reasonable goals that will better support our project.  So far we are on the ball for this round of PBL projects.  I really think that our short film is going to be great.  Here are the goals for today:

  • Finish script
  • Decide what props we need
  • Lay out the scenes
  • Communicate with my partners effectively
  • Teach Kylie how to play the ukulele for our short film

Monday, March 28, 2011

Reflections 3/28/11

I think that I was very diligent in completing my daily goals. I would give myself about an eight for today. I would give myself an eight because I did not finish the script for the movie. But in place of finishing the script, my partners and I worked on the costuming which is another important factor for this movie. I feel that we are on pace so far. I also feel that we are going to have an excellent project.

Daily Goals 1/28/2011

I am super excited for this round of projects! The whole school is doing a group project this time and our essential question is "What is Creativity?" The students have broken into smaller groups and are completing projects using sub essential questions. I am in a group with Kylie and Alyssa. Our sub essential question is, "How can we successfully write, film, edit, and produce a one-woman short romantic comedy." Right now we are finishing our project planning form. My daily goals for today are:

  • Complete project planning form
  • Successfully collaborate with my partners
  • Get the outline for our film
  • Finish the script
  • Be prepared for Wednesday PBL
  • Hopefully be ready to film on Wednesday

Daily Goals 3/23/11

I have one main goal today: GET MY PROJECT DONE! To get my project done today I need to be extremely focused on my work. I will also need to make sure that I have time set away this evening to work on my project if I do not get it finished during school.

Literary Response #3 "A Farewell to Arms"

I had an interesting, and rather odd connection with Frederick Henry, the main protagonist, in this book. (I am going to call him Henry in this blog because that is the name he is most commonly referred to in the book.) Henry, while on the Italian World War 1 front was shot in the legs by Austrian soldiers. He hurt his right need pretty badly. He made it to safety and was eventually moved to the American hospital in Milan, Italy because he was an American and had connections with the right people. Henry had to undergo surgeries and had to participate in the 1917 version of physical therapy. His incident connects to my life because I have had an injury to my right knee and I had to have surgery.

Reflections 3/21/11

For today, I think I would give myself an eight when rating the amount of work that I got done today. I would give myself an eight because I did not complete the amount of work that I would have liked at school and I am doing it at home instead. I just finished my book "A Farewell to Arms" for my literary analysis and I am going to post my last blog on that book shortly after this. I got a fair amount of work done on my project today and I am excited that it is coming along the way that it is. I also completed a discussion-based assessment for my H.O.P.E. course today which I did not put on my daily goals previously.

Daily Goals 3/21/11

I have many things to do today. Below is the list of items I need to complete:

  • Finish literary analysis book
  • Post last blog
  • Finish project
  • End of day blog

Sunday, March 20, 2011

Literary Response #2 "A Farewell To Arms"

So far, I am really liking this book. I am enjoying Ernest Hemingway's "matter of fact" style of writing. His writing style is really different than any other novelist's style of writing that I have read previously. A Farewell to Arms takes place on the Italian front of World War 1. Much of the book takes place in Milan, Italy. So far in the novel the main protagonist has been living in a villa. He has also been driving around the front in his ambulance. The main protagonist's name is Lieutenant Frederic Henry. Lieutenant Henry is an ambulance driver on the front; he is also an American. Lieutenant is often called Tenente, which is Italian for Lieutenant, throughout the novel. So far I have learned that Lieutenant Henry is the type of character who keeps a lot of his feelings to himself. He is the type of person whom everybody in the novel likes and whom everybody thinks they know a lot about but they do not realize that he is a very deep character. The other main character in "A Farewell to Arms" is Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. Catherine is described as very beautiful and tall. She is also very intelligent. Catherine falls in love with Lieutenant Henry almost immediately. He loves her to a degree but tries hard to not fall farther in love with her. I don't know how or if their love progresses because I have not read far enough into the book yet. At this point in the novel it surprised me how frankly their love was portrayed.  Their are two conflicts that I have come across so far in this book. The first conflict being that Lieutenant Henry was wounded in an attack on the Italian army. He is spending time recovering and was moved to an American hospital in Milan right now in the book. Catherine is also being moved to that hospital because there is a lack of nurses. The second conflict I found was Lieutenant Henry's reluctance to love Catherine when she loves him so obviously and boldly. He thinks that she is beautiful but shows a real reluctance to "love" her.

  • Continue to get information to put in the Prezi
  • Work on the Prezi
  • Pick songs to use
  • Get at least half of my project completed

Monday, March 14, 2011

Reflections 3/14/11

Today has been a very effective day. I have gotten quite a lot done on my project "What makes a hit song". Here are the goals that I was supposed to have completed for today:

  • Start on my project "What makes a hit song?"
  • Lay out project
  • Pick songs
  • Start putting information into Prezi
I have started work on my project. I gathered information this morning and I still need about another day to gather all the information that I need for my project. I have decided on a flow-chart type layout for my project. I don't have the specifics for the Prezi  necessarily, but I have an idea. Later tonight I will work on getting the specifics down and work on getting my vision for the project down. I am still undecided on the songs that I am going to use for my project. I will need a little more time to figure out the direction that I am going with my project in order to determine the exact songs I will use. I have decided that I will use songs from the billboard charts though. I have started my Prezi also.

Daily Goals 3/14/11

Daily Goals:

  • Start on my project "What makes a hit song?"
  • Lay out project
  • Pick songs
  • Start putting information into Prezi
I will need to spend my time wisely in order to complete all my work that I have to do today.

Literary Response #1 "Farewell to Arms"

I am excited for this cycle of literary responses! I have chosen to read "Farewell to Arms" which is by Ernest Hemingway. "Farewell to Arms" is a literary war novel written about World War 1. This book has a few main themes. The first is that war is a very grim reality. The second theme in "Farewell to Arms" is that there is a relationship between love and pain. The main idea and the themes are the same in this novel.

OHpedia Project Final Reflection

How was the OHpedia project important to you?
The High School OHpedia project turned out to be very important to me.  I learned a lot about the post WW2 economy and the life of the American people at that time period.  Doing this OHpedia project I ran into a few issues with my partner.  We worked through them and I found that the OHpedia project helped me develop patience skills and also skills to help me work through problems. I also learned a lot while I was reading and doing the activities for my friend's lesson plans.

How did your expectations of what you could do as a learner change throughout this project?
My expectations of what I could do as a learned changed for the positive as I worked throughout the OHpedia project.  I learned how to balance my time correctly as I worked around issues that came up.  I also learned that I have a lot of good ideas when it comes to project work.

In what ways did you become more persistent or tolerant throughout the process?
I learned that tolerance of others is necessary when it comes to working in a group. I also found that the easiest way to deal with issues with team members is through kindness.

What satisfied you most about this project?
I was very satisfied with all of the information that I learned during the OHpedia project. I have learned so much about American History and how American history has affected American people in the past and now.

What things about this project really matched your style of learning?
Being able to watch videos on my benchmarks really fit my style of learning. I am a very visual person and I like to relate my readings to videos or pictures.  I liked the Wiki format that we used and it really helped my style of learning.

What will you always remember about this project?
I will always remember how I learned to overcome my issues that I ran into while I was doing my project. I will also always remember the information that I learned. I feel that doing project work help all the information stick into my head.

Reflections 3/2/11

Today has been very productive. I read and completed the assignments for two lessons. I first completed Hunter and Nathan's lesson and assignment which was on World War Two, Vietnam, Cold, and Korean Wars.  I then completed McKenzie and Kylie's lesson which was on the Industrial Revolution. Tonight I have to complete Mira and Taylor's lesson and I also have to start on my standards paper. I am writing about the Industrial Revolution for my paper. Today a new student started! Her name is Sydney and she used to live here but now she lives in South Africa. We are really excited to have her as an addition to our OH Community. We has a special guest come to OH today. Mr Sung, who is a professional violinist came to preform for us. He also talked to us about the properties of sound. He also talked to us a little about music theory.

Today's Governments

Today the whole school traveled to Cheaha State Park in Alabama. Our bus ride was fun and we got to the park around one'o'clock.  We have been learning about different governments this week and we decided that we would write all the different types of governments on paper, put them into a hat, and whichever type of government was chosen, that would decide how we would choose our activities for the rest of the day. The government types chosen at different times were Dudeocracy(A.K.A. a patriarchy. The government of OH ruled by the "Dudes"), we had a dictatorship (ruled by Joanna), and we also had a Democracy.

The Dudeocracy was unorganized, and the guys did not get their thoughts together very well. Granted, the Dudeocracy only lasted a few minuets and then a new form of government was chosen.  While the Dudeocracy was in session, we were trying to decide what to do with our time.  The guys wanted to go on a hike, and the girls didn't have any objections. We didn't really have any problems.  I don't know if I would like to have a Dudeocracy at OH all of the time.  We would have a lot of future disagreements and there are better forms of "governments" out there for us to use.

The Dictatorship was pretty fun while it lasted.  I think that Joanna had a fun time deciding where we would go on our hike.  I didn't really like the fact that we had to do EXACTLY what Joanna said.  We couldn't go anywhere other than where she said.  I would not like having to do exactly what Joanna said at OH for a year. There would be a lot of conflicting opinions.

I think that the Democracy worked the best for us. Everbody had a say and even though some people did not what to do what the majority wanted to do, they we eventually happy. I think that having a Democracy all the time at OH would work out very well.

My Family Government

A Constitutional Democratic Monarchy would describe my family government. My parents are the monarchs, but they follow a "constitution". The "constitution" is set rules and guidelines that they set for the children to follow to follow. We are also Democratic because the ideas of the children are heard but overall, the Monarchs rule.

Yes, I was able to complete all my goals today. I finished benchmark 5, and posted it to the high school OHpedia page. I was also able to start on a new benchmark. Hopefully I will have the new benchmark completed by tomorrow. I plan on doing two benchmarks tomorrow if time allows. I have not yet completed my project so I did not need to contact the facilitators today. I am still having issues with finishing my project on time.

Daily Goals 1/31/11

I am feeling okay in the PBL process at this point. I do feel successful in the work that my partner and I have completed so far. Reflections 1/26/11

I completed almost all of my goals today! I Was able to finish the benchmark that I was working on. I finished the writing portion, retrieved pictures, and retrieved videos from Youtube. My partner and I communicated effectively and I started on a new benchmark. Today I learned that if I try hard to focus, I get a lot of things done! :)

Daily Goals 1/26/11

Daily Goals:
  • Finish Benchmark 3
  • Get at least two other benchmarks started and finished
  • Communicate effectively with my partner
Our OHpedia will benefit those looking for important information on the Post World War 2 period to present day. Those looking for information on the Civil Rights' Movements, and other movements will also find our OHpedia helpful. Students needing information for a project on this particular time period would find this OHpedia entry helpful.

Daily Goals Reflection 1/24/11

I unfortunately did not complete all of my goals that I set for today; though I did complete half of them. I was able to complete half my goals because I was focused today. Since I did not meet my daily goals, I was not able to go on and complete any other PBL work. I think that on Wednesday I will come into school more focused and I will be able to complete my goals. I don't have any lingering issues with PBL work. :)

Daily Goals 1/24/11

Goals for today:

  • Get the majority of the benchmarks finished
  • Complete benchmark one
  • Communicate more effectively with my partner
  • Organize the collected information in a more effective way

End of the Day Reflection 1/19/11

  • Did I achieve my goals? Why or why not?
Yes, I did complete all of the goals that I set for my partner and I today. This morning, we finished collecting websites to use as resources for our OHpedia. We also read a majority of our websites. We skimmed through a lot of our sites and started picking out the most important information to use. I have almost completed getting the information for the last benchmark.
  • What did I notice about myself as a learner today?
I noticed that I work better in the morning. I am able to focus much better, whereas in the afternoon I am more easily distracted. I also noticed that it is easier to work in groups than it is to work alone. I usually get more work done when I work in a group.
  • What went well today?
Cale and I finished our Project Planning form, which is exciting. We are now able to start our research. We had a "check in" with Mr. Randy today and he cleared us to start our project. We also got a good amount of information for our benchmarks.
  • What do I need to change next time I work on PBL?
Next time I work on PBL I need to focus myself better in the afternoon. I need to realize that I don't really have that much time, and work as hard as I can to get the project done.
  • What do I need help with on Friday (from facilitators)?
I need more clarification on how much information pertaining to the benchmarks should be put in the OHpedia entry. I
  • How would I rate myself as a group member today (HS only)
I would give myself and 8, as a group member. For the most part I was focused, but I can do better on Friday.

Daily Goals Check Out 1/17/11

Did you achieve your daily goals?

I achieved almost all of my daily goals today. The one that I did not achieve was finishing the second draft of my project planning form. My partner and I still have to find websites. We're about half way done with finishing that portion of the project planning form. I have started research by finding websites to use for the OHpedia entry; I have also been reading the information that I find on the websites. I have collaborated with my partner today. I caught him up on what I did last week. We have also been looking for websites together. We've started our OHpedia entry by conducting research. Our ideas for the online lesson is an online quiz.

Why or why not?

I achieved my goals because for the majority of the day I was highly focused. I spent my time researching, and collecting information. I tried not to get distracted by others today. I think that I could have been a little more focused though. If I was more focused I could probably have completed my project planning form.

What did you notice about yourself as a learner today? Work habits etc.

I noticed that I got a lot of work done today. I used my time wisely. It also helps me to focus by taking small five minute brain breaks every so often. I used self motivation today, and I hope to continue using that tomorrow too.
